Chapter 19
Overview
Millie finds a bloody handprint and a trail of blood leading from the upstairs bathroom to Wendy Garrick’s locked guest-room door. Defying Douglas’s rules, Millie knocks and threatens to call the police, forcing Wendy to respond and claim the blood came from a cracked tooth. When Wendy finally unlocks the door and opens it, Millie is confronted with something so alarming she nearly screams.
Summary
Millie notices the Garrick penthouse is unusually quiet, though she can hear a woman moving in the guest bedroom she has been warned not to disturb. After days of trying to rationalize the blood she found on Wendy Garrick’s nightgown, Millie focuses on her cleaning and on needing the job, while continuing to deflect Brock’s hints about moving in together.
While cleaning the upstairs bathroom, Millie discovers a fresh, partial bloody handprint on the sink and then spots blood droplets on the floor. She follows the droplets into the hall and sees the trail continue across the carpet.
The blood trail leads directly to the guest-bedroom door. Despite Douglas Garrick’s strict rule not to knock, Millie remembers her fear of ignoring a possible emergency and knocks anyway, calling for Wendy. There is no response, and when Millie tries the knob, she finds the door locked.
Millie warns that she will call the police if Wendy does not respond. Wendy answers in a choked voice, insisting she is fine and begging Millie not to call. Millie refuses to leave without seeing Wendy, pressing for the door to be opened.
After a long pause, Wendy unlocks the door and opens it slightly. Whatever Millie sees through the crack is so shocking that she clamps a hand over her mouth to stop herself from screaming.
