Chapter 37
Overview
On her last scheduled cleaning visit, Millie prepares to leave the Garricks for good and plans to confess everything to Brock that night, while also deciding to call Enzo to help Wendy going forward. Her plans derail when she overhears Douglas erupting in the locked guestroom, interrogating Wendy about leaving the house and accusing her of seeing another man. The confrontation escalates into violence, and when Millie hears signs Wendy is being choked, she realizes she may need to use the hidden gun to intervene.
Summary
While finishing what she expects to be her final cleaning session at the Garricks’ house, Millie Calloway plans to meet Brock afterward for dinner and finally tell him everything about herself. She hopes Douglas Garrick will at least leave a big tip, but mainly feels relieved to be leaving the house and figuring out how to help Wendy from the outside.
As Millie folds and puts away a small load of laundry, she keeps thinking about the gun Wendy found hidden behind the bookcase. Millie fears Wendy is desperate enough to shoot Douglas, and worries Wendy would end up in prison without medical documentation of the abuse. Millie decides she will call Enzo the next day to take over helping Wendy, even though it will be hard for Millie to be around him.
A loud crash in the hallway interrupts Millie, and she immediately recognizes it as the sound of Wendy being hurt. Millie steps out and hears Douglas yelling from inside the locked guestroom, enraged about an $80 credit-card charge for lunch at La Cipolla and furious that Wendy left the house, insisting someone could have seen her.
Wendy frantically explains she ate with her friend Gisele and paid because Gisele is between jobs, but Douglas pivots to accusing Wendy of lying and meeting a man—possibly the same man who drove her upstate. Wendy sobs and insists it was Gisele. Douglas calls her a “tramp wife,” and a sickening crash and Wendy’s scream follow.
After the room goes silent, Millie hears a gurgling sound that suggests Wendy is being choked. Realizing she can’t stand by any longer, Millie resolves she has to stop what’s happening—then remembers the gun.
