Chapter 65
Overview
Brock calls Millie to warn that police found gunshot residue on her clothes, making an arrest warrant likely and tightening the case that frames her for murder. Millie wants to rush to the lake cabin to confront Russell and Wendy, but Enzo blocks her and forces her to promise she will not go. They part with declarations of love, yet Millie leaves with Enzo’s car keys, signaling she intends to act anyway.
Summary
At Enzo’s apartment, Millie answers a call from her ex-boyfriend, Brock. Brock apologizes for abandoning Millie at the police station and says he spoke with the detective again.
Brock warns that police tested clothing taken from Millie’s laundry hamper for gunshot residue, and the test came back positive. Brock believes they were waiting on that result and are likely securing an arrest warrant now, leaving Millie terrified that the case against her is becoming airtight.
Millie tells Enzo about the residue, and Enzo confirms even firing a blank can leave gunshot residue on clothing. Millie spirals, convinced she will be imprisoned because the evidence stacks up: residue, fingerprints on the weapon, and the doorman placing her at the building around the time of the murder.
Determined to confront the truth, Millie insists on going to the lake cabin tied to Russell. Enzo refuses, destroys the written address, and physically stops Millie from leaving, arguing that desperate actions will only give police a reason to lock Millie up. Millie promises she will not go.
Millie decides to return to her apartment to “face the music.” She and Enzo share an emotional goodbye, exchange declarations of love, and Enzo vows he will keep Millie from returning to prison. As Millie leaves, she privately admits she has lied—she has secretly taken Enzo’s car keys from his apartment.
