Chapter 53
Overview
Wendy visits Russell Simonds’s furniture store intending to buy a little, but she is captivated by both the restored pieces and Russell himself. She splurges on multiple items, and Russell gives her his personal number, creating a direct line of contact. By the end, Wendy’s internal resolve shifts from simple shopping to a clear intent to pursue Russell as something more.
Summary
Wendy Garrick decides to patronize Russell Simonds’s small furniture store to prove she is not “the most horrible woman,” reasoning she can always donate anything too tacky.
Inside, Wendy is surprised to find an elegant restored oak dresser with a mirror and dovetailed drawers, exactly the kind of piece she has been searching for. As Wendy admires it, Russell approaches and explains it is a vintage piece he restored himself.
Wendy praises the workmanship and openly signals she is not interested in bargaining, saying that when she wants something, she will do whatever it takes to get it. Russell introduces himself, and Wendy realizes he is Marybeth Simonds’s husband, though he is far more polished and attractive than she expected.
Wendy introduces herself as Wendy Garrick and mentions that Marybeth, who works for Wendy’s husband, suggested the store. Encouraged by Russell’s attention and her own attraction, Wendy purchases a large amount of furniture.
When Wendy pays, Russell gives her his card and writes his phone number on the back, inviting her to contact him with any problems. Wendy pockets the card while privately thinking there is something else in the store she wants to take home—Russell himself—and reiterates her determination to get what she wants.
