Chapter 29
Overview
Millie delivers Wendy to a cheap motel near Albany and books a room under Millie’s own ID, paying cash to avoid an electronic trail. Wendy panics about Douglas tracking her down, but Millie reassures her and keeps Wendy out of sight. After an emotional goodbye and a final warning about Douglas’s determination, Wendy disappears into room 207 and Millie heads back.
Summary
Millie drives Wendy toward Albany, delayed by traffic and their McDonald’s stop, and calculates that the late hour will help her return trip go faster. As they near Albany, Millie chooses a roadside rest stop motel that looks cheap and has exterior-facing rooms, minimizing the chance Wendy will be seen.
Wendy’s nerves spike once they arrive. Wendy worries Douglas will find her by checking motels and pressuring staff for information, but Millie insists the plan is for Millie to rent the room so Wendy won’t need to show herself or her identification.
Wendy gives Millie cash, and Millie goes into the motel office to reserve a room. The young desk clerk demands photo ID, which Millie provides while worrying that any record could become a lead if Douglas is as clever and relentless as Wendy believes; Millie is relieved the clerk takes cash and does not require a credit card.
The clerk gives Millie an old-style key for room 207 and makes a suggestive remark that convinces Millie he will remember her, though she hopes he assumes she is there for something illicit rather than connecting the reservation to Wendy. Millie returns to the car, where Wendy keeps a baseball cap pulled low as a disguise.
Outside, Wendy tearfully thanks Millie and warns again that Douglas will search everywhere. Wendy hugs Millie goodbye, takes her bags, and heads toward room 207; Millie watches until Wendy disappears, then gets back in the car and drives home.
