Chapter 40
Overview
Millie returns home in shock after killing Douglas, clinging to the hope that Wendy’s cover story will keep the police from tracing the shooting back to her. Brock repeatedly calls, forcing Millie to lie about being ill and cancel their planned dinner and “big talk.” Millie isolates herself, refusing help and deciding to keep Brock—and everyone else—out of the fallout.
Summary
Millie rides the subway back to the Bronx in shock, trembling and rocking as she replays shooting Douglas Garrick. Millie admits she didn’t mean for it to happen this way, yet cannot deny she wanted Douglas dead, and now has to face that she has killed a man again.
Trying to steady herself, Millie clings to the plan Wendy set in motion: Wendy will keep her story, and the police won’t connect Millie to the killing. Millie focuses on getting home and surviving the aftermath without being discovered.
As soon as Millie exits the station, her phone shows a stack of missed calls and voicemails from Brock, reminding her they were supposed to have dinner and a serious conversation. Millie calls Brock back and, unprepared to explain, claims she is sick with a sudden stomach bug, adding graphic details to make the excuse believable.
Brock’s suspicion softens into concern, and Brock offers to come over with soup and comfort her. Guilty but determined not to involve him, Millie refuses and asks for a rain check; Brock agrees and tells her to get better.
After hanging up, Millie feels ashamed for lying to Brock but decides keeping him away is safest. Millie considers talking to Enzo but rejects it as too risky, and resolves to go home, stay quiet, and wait for the situation to pass.
