Chapter 44
Overview
Millie’s attempt to explain Douglas’s abuse and the gun only deepens Detective Ramirez’s doubt, and he steps out, leaving Millie alone with Brock. Brock confronts Millie about the affair evidence and Millie’s lies, then asks outright if Millie killed Douglas. When Millie cannot deny shooting Douglas, Brock withdraws as counsel and walks away from the relationship, leaving Millie devastated.
Summary
Millie’s interrogation deteriorates as Millie tries to assemble a safer version of events for Detective Ramirez. Millie insists Douglas Garrick abused Wendy and claims Millie only touched the gun because Wendy showed it as protection, but Millie cannot explain why Wendy’s fingerprints are missing. Detective Ramirez’s skepticism is obvious.
Instead of arresting Millie immediately, Detective Ramirez leaves the room, ordering Millie to stay put. Millie is left alone with Brock, who has been silent and shaken throughout the questioning.
Brock finally erupts, furious and hurt about discovering Millie’s murder conviction and the evidence that makes it look like Millie was cheating with Douglas. Millie denies any affair and repeats that Millie was trying to help Wendy, but Brock points out how the missed dinners and Millie’s lies (including the “stomach bug”) look incriminating.
Brock asks Millie directly whether Millie killed Douglas Garrick. Millie cannot deny the one undeniable fact: Millie shot Douglas. Brock, overwhelmed and unable to reconcile what he’s learning, says he cannot represent Millie and cannot stay with Millie.
Brock leaves Millie to rely on a public defender or find another lawyer, effectively ending their relationship. After the door shuts, Millie breaks down in tears.
