Chapter 62
Overview
Millie and Enzo stake out a brownstone from dawn, hoping to spot the impostor “Douglas” or the blond woman tied to the setup against Millie. While waiting, they acknowledge their renewed intimacy and Enzo’s regret over leaving for Italy. The chapter turns when Millie finally sees the blond woman leaving the building, and Enzo goes inside a Dunkin’ Donuts to confront her for information.
Summary
Millie and Enzo spend the early morning staking out a brownstone, arriving around six to watch for anyone entering or leaving. Enzo insists on simple “disguises” with caps and sunglasses, while Millie worries they might miss someone if there is another exit.
As the hours pass with no sign of the “mystery man” Millie shot or the blond woman, Enzo briefly leaves to buy coffee and bagels from a Dunkin’ Donuts across the street. Millie refuses to eat, staying fixed on the building out of fear that she could be arrested and that only she can identify the man.
While they wait, Enzo brings up their late night together, and Millie admits she cannot focus but confirms it was good. Enzo confesses he missed Millie while he was in Italy caring for his mother and regrets having to choose between them; Millie admits she thinks she should have waited for him.
The surveillance finally pays off when a blond woman Millie recognizes exits the brownstone in business attire. Millie is only “pretty sure,” but the resemblance is close enough that she decides they must act.
Before they can follow, the woman crosses the street and enters the same Dunkin’ Donuts. Enzo decides to approach her directly, claiming his charm will get answers, and he heads inside to try to learn what she knows.
