Chapter 11
Overview
Millie returns with groceries to find the penthouse tense, hearing shouting and glass shattering upstairs. Douglas rushes down, blocks her from going up, and orders her to leave while sporting a torn shirt that suggests a recent confrontation. He also forces Millie to run an awkward errand to return a rejected gift, revealing a harsher, controlling side and escalating Millie’s suspicion that Wendy is not safe.
Summary
Millie arrives back at the Garricks’ penthouse carrying four overflowing grocery bags, including the hard-to-find cucamelons. She struggles to carry everything and sets the bags down in the living room to catch her breath and plan how to get them to the kitchen.
While she pauses, Millie hears muffled shouting coming from upstairs, followed by a loud crash that sounds like shattering glass. Alarmed, she creeps toward the stairwell, ready to go up and make sure everything is okay.
Before Millie can take a step, a door slams upstairs and Douglas Garrick comes down the stairs quickly. He stops her at the bottom, flushed and tense, and demands to know why she is there and why she is not in the kitchen putting groceries away.
Millie explains she heard a crash and was worried, but Douglas abruptly insists everything is fine. Millie notices a jagged tear in Douglas’s dress shirt near his breast pocket, which deepens her suspicion that something just happened upstairs in Wendy’s room.
Douglas tells Millie he will handle the groceries and orders her to leave. He also hands her a pink gift bag to return because Wendy “didn’t want it,” then snaps at Millie when she questions how to return it without a receipt. Millie feels compelled to check on Wendy, but Douglas physically positions himself to block the stairs, leaving Millie no choice but to leave.
