Chapter 31
Overview
Millie’s feared confrontation with the black Mazda becomes a fraught reunion when the driver is revealed as Enzo, her ex-boyfriend. Enzo admits he has been following her for three months as a self-appointed bodyguard, claiming he stayed away because he thought she hated him and because his mother was dying.
The chapter pivots when Enzo reveals he was responsible for getting Xavier arrested on drug charges, ensuring Xavier could not threaten Millie again. Millie, shaken and conflicted, accepts a ride home and decides to start confiding in Enzo about her recent crisis.
Summary
Outside, Millie prepares to defend herself when the black Mazda confronts her, frantically searching her purse for mace and warning the approaching figure to stay back. The man raises his hands and speaks, and Millie recognizes Enzo’s voice, rushing into his arms with relief and happiness.
The reunion turns sharp when Enzo admits he returned over three months ago. Millie realizes the “someone watching” feeling she blamed on Douglas Garrick or Xavier Marin was Enzo—he has been following her in the Mazda. Enzo insists it was not stalking but protecting her as a bodyguard because he believed Millie was angry with him for not coming back.
Millie confronts Enzo about abandoning her without explanation, and Enzo reveals the reason: he stayed because his mother was gravely ill and he was all she had. Enzo says his mother has since died, and Millie apologizes, while also insisting he should have trusted her enough to tell her the truth. Enzo pushes back, pointing out that Millie ended things and started dating Brock, while he claims he never stopped loving her.
Enzo argues Millie needed protection, citing her neighborhood and implying he prevented at least one unseen threat. When Millie says Brock can protect her, Enzo brings up Xavier Marin’s attack and the lack of consequences. Enzo admits he arranged for Xavier to be caught with drugs—“I know a guy”—ensuring Xavier went to prison so he could not harm Millie again.
Still conflicted, Millie accepts Enzo’s offer of a ride home and sits beside him, overwhelmed by nostalgia and mistrust. As Enzo drives uptown, he asks why Millie was in such a rush earlier, and Millie begins telling him what has been happening.
