Chapter 6
Overview
On her first day at the Garricks’ penthouse, Millie begins cleaning while Douglas and Wendy remain out of sight. Upstairs, she hears a mysterious thump and finds the household’s “dirty” laundry oddly folded, raising her unease. Millie then briefly makes eye contact with someone—likely Wendy—peering through a cracked guest-room door before it snaps shut, reinforcing Douglas’s warning to leave Wendy alone.
Summary
Millie Calloway starts her first day as the Garricks’ housekeeper. Douglas Garrick has arranged building access, and Millie rides the creaking elevator up to the penthouse, noting the building skips the thirteenth floor.
Inside, Millie finds the apartment mostly tidy aside from ordinary city dust. Calling out for Douglas and Wendy Garrick gets no response, and Millie takes in the antique-looking decor and a row of framed photos showing Douglas with a thin, auburn-haired woman Millie assumes is Wendy.
A loud thump from upstairs startles Millie, and she worries about appearing nosy. With no one appearing on the stairs, Millie decides to focus on her tasks and begins with laundry, heading to the master bedroom closet to retrieve the hamper Douglas showed her.
Millie is unnerved to discover the “dirty” laundry is neatly folded, something she has never encountered. As she carries the hamper down the hall, she notices the guest bedroom door is slightly open.
Millie calls out and introduces herself, briefly seeing a green eye watching her through the crack. When Millie approaches, the door snaps shut. Remembering Douglas’s warning not to bother Wendy because of her illness, Millie chooses not to knock and returns to her plan to finish laundry, make dinner, and leave.
