Millie continues driving Wendy away from Douglas Garrick and exits the highway when Wendy excitedly asks to stop for McDonald’s, a small freedom Wendy has been denied under Douglas’s strict control. Millie also plans to refuel.

As Wendy goes inside, Millie’s phone rings and Brock calls, angry that Millie missed their planned seven o’clock dinner without warning. Millie feels guilty and fears she is sabotaging the relationship, partly because she is hiding the truth about herself and cannot explain why she is hours away.

Pressed for an explanation, Millie lies that she has to work and study. Brock, frustrated, says his patience is running out and demands clarity about where their relationship is going because he wants something serious.

Not wanting to lose Brock, Millie reassures him and says she is not wasting his time. She tells Brock she loves him, which immediately calms him, and she promises they will have a real talk “next week” once things settle down.

Brock suggests dinner tomorrow and staying at his place, and Millie agrees. After they end the call by saying “I love you,” Millie hangs up uneasy, thinking Brock may not truly know her, doubting she can ever have a normal life, and recalling that only one man has ever understood her.
