Millie begins driving Wendy out of Manhattan, expecting a roughly five-hour trip. Their plan is to reach the Albany area, check Wendy into a cheap roadside motel for the night, and have Fiona pick Wendy up the next morning with clothes and cash so Douglas will not be able to find her.

To avoid being seen, Millie parks the conspicuous red Hyundai a block away from the building. While waiting, Millie receives a text from Douglas asking if Millie will come to clean tonight, and Millie replies that she will in order to keep things looking normal, even though Millie intends to be gone with Wendy.

Wendy appears with two pieces of luggage, dressed plainly in jeans and a hoodie, and happily notes Douglas hated jeans, which is why she packed them. Millie loads the bags, starts the GPS, and they head out; Wendy confirms Douglas said goodbye and left, likely boarding a flight to Los Angeles.

As Millie drives through the city, Wendy asks whether Millie told anyone about the escape plan, and Millie assures Wendy she told no one. Millie drives aggressively in her rush to get them out safely, nearly hitting a pedestrian and drawing Wendy’s alarm.

At a stoplight, Millie notices a black Mazda behind them with a cracked right front headlight, matching a car Millie has repeatedly seen for months. Millie suspects she is being followed and briefly considers whether it could be Douglas or Xavier Marin, then tests the Mazda by changing lanes and watching it remain behind them; Millie catches the first three license plate characters, “58F,” matching what Millie remembers from before. Wendy pleads for Millie to slow down after Millie nearly sideswipes another vehicle.

Millie reaches the FDR Drive expecting the Mazda to follow onto the highway, but when Millie looks again, the Mazda is gone and did not turn with them. Millie feels relieved and concludes it was only a coincidence, telling herself everything will be fine.
