Chapter 25
Overview
Wendy reveals she nearly killed herself after Millie was sent away, but instead followed Millie’s advice to contact someone from her past. She reconnects with her college friend Fiona, who offers her a hidden place to stay, and Wendy decides to flee when Douglas leaves town tomorrow. Wendy asks Millie to drive her to Albany, and Millie agrees despite Wendy’s warning that Douglas will relentlessly and dangerously pursue them.
Summary
Wendy abruptly pulls Millie to the sofa and asks if Millie truly meant her offer to help. Wendy admits that after Millie left, Wendy felt hopeless and considered killing herself, but stopped because Millie had urged her to reach out to someone Douglas doesn’t know.
Wendy explains that she tracked down an old college friend, Fiona, through another friend and spoke to Fiona for hours that morning. Fiona lives mostly off the grid on a farm outside Potsdam, New York, and has offered Wendy a place to stay as long as needed.
Wendy acknowledges it is not a permanent fix, but says it will give her time to plan: find an attorney, navigate the system, and start over while hidden from Douglas. Millie praises Wendy’s initiative, while privately worrying that Douglas’s resources and influence make escape difficult.
Wendy then asks for a major favor: a ride. Wendy plans to leave tomorrow when Douglas is out of town, and Fiona can pick Wendy up if Wendy can reach Albany. Because Wendy can’t safely rent a car using her ID, Millie agrees to rent a car herself and drive Wendy to Albany.
Wendy thanks Millie and warns that helping her will put Millie in danger, emphasizing that Douglas is extremely dangerous and will do whatever it takes to find Wendy and force her back. Millie insists she isn’t scared, but internally wonders if she is underestimating Douglas Garrick.
