Chapter 21
Overview
Millie reflects in class on how easily people ignore need, a theme that mirrors her inability to walk away from danger. Outside, Amber Degraw needles Millie about working for Douglas Garrick and flees when Olive calls Millie “Mama.” A call from Jobmatch reveals Millie’s housekeeping ad never ran, forcing Millie to question how Douglas found and targeted her in the first place.
Summary
In a college lecture, Millie Calloway listens as Dr. Kindred describes a famous experiment in which violinist Josh Bell plays in a subway and is mostly ignored. When Dr. Kindred asks why, Millie suggests people avoided stopping because they assumed helping would cost them money, and Millie reflects that she always helps even when she should not.
After class, Millie runs into Amber Degraw, her former employer who fired her. Amber acts overly friendly, probes where Millie is working, and reveals she saw Millie entering Douglas Garrick’s building. Amber’s tone implies insinuations about Millie’s relationship with Douglas.
Millie greets Amber’s daughter Olive, who immediately recognizes Millie and excitedly calls her “Mama.” Amber panics, insists she is Olive’s mother, and rushes away with Olive crying for Millie, leaving Millie amused despite the awkwardness.
Millie then receives a call from Lisa at Jobmatch about a declined American Express payment. Lisa explains Millie’s housekeeper ad never went live because it was never paid for; Millie realizes the implication that Douglas Garrick contacted her without ever seeing an online ad, making his hiring of her feel newly suspicious.
