Chapter 23
Overview
Millie finally confronts Wendy and learns Wendy deliberately recruited her: Wendy got Millie’s number from Ginger Howell after Douglas hurt Wendy and broke Wendy’s wrist. Wendy confirms Douglas’s abuse and expresses paranoia that he may be monitoring the house, insisting that escape is impossible. Despite Wendy rejecting help and slamming the door, Millie leaves determined to fight Douglas and protect Wendy.
Summary
Millie arrives at the Garricks’ penthouse carrying Douglas Garrick’s expensive dry cleaning. With the home quiet and Wendy likely upstairs, Millie puts away Douglas’s suits in the master bedroom, but stays focused on confronting Wendy about how Wendy obtained Millie’s phone number.
Millie walks the dark second-floor hallway, where the lights still do not work, and stops at the guest bedroom door. She remembers cleaning Wendy’s blood from the bathroom and carpet and notes Douglas does not know Millie discovered it. Despite Wendy’s earlier warning to leave, Millie knocks.
Wendy opens the door, looking bruised but somewhat improved and visibly emaciated. Millie presses Wendy about Douglas’s claim that Wendy provided Millie’s number. When Millie reveals the job ad never ran and demands the truth, Wendy reluctantly admits she got Millie’s number from Ginger Howell.
Millie realizes Wendy targeted her deliberately and pushes for the real reason. Wendy explains Douglas pushed Wendy down and broke Wendy’s wrist, but Douglas stayed in the exam room so Wendy had to lie to medical staff. Wendy says Douglas rarely allows anyone into the penthouse, and Wendy had been desperate enough to bring Millie in for help, but now insists escaping Douglas is not an option because Douglas is “everywhere,” possibly watching or listening.
Millie tries to problem-solve—asking about cash and outside friends—while Wendy warns Millie that helping will end badly. Wendy angrily removes a bracelet Douglas gave her and forces it into Millie’s hand, saying she cannot stand the gifts, especially after reading the inscription: “To W, You are mine forever, Love D.” Wendy then refuses Millie’s offer of help, orders Millie to leave, and slams the door; Millie leaves more convinced Wendy is terrified and more determined to take Douglas on anyway.
