Chapter 9
Overview
Millie finally confronts the sounds from Wendy Garrick’s room after hearing clear sobbing, but Wendy only opens the door a crack, appears physically unwell, and shuts Millie out with hostility. Douglas returns home upbeat with roses and a diamond bracelet, yet reacts sharply to the idea that Millie might have spoken to Wendy and again orders Millie to leave her alone. The chapter deepens Millie’s suspicion that something is wrong in the Garrick home despite Douglas’s show of devotion.
Summary
Millie continues to linger and listen whenever she passes the closed guest bedroom, frustrated that after a month working for the Garricks she still has not truly met Wendy Garrick. Remembering past experiences cleaning houses and a time she tried to fix “bad things,” Millie’s curiosity and concern intensify when she hears a new sound from the room.
Stopping in the hallway with the vacuum, Millie presses her ear to the door and clearly hears sobbing. Although Douglas previously warned her not to disturb Wendy, Millie decides she cannot ignore it and knocks, calling out to ask if Mrs. Garrick is all right. The crying stops immediately, but Wendy does not answer.
Millie insists she will not leave until she knows Wendy is okay. After a pause, Wendy approaches and cracks the door open just enough for Millie to see one bloodshot, puffy green eye. Wendy demands to know what Millie wants, rejects Millie’s concern, says Douglas already told Millie she is unwell, and shuts the door in Millie’s face.
Downstairs, Millie tries to convince herself to stay out of it, especially since Brock keeps telling her to mind her own business. Douglas then arrives in a cheerful mood, carrying roses and a blue velvet jewelry box, and asks about Millie’s progress. When Millie mentions hearing Wendy crying, Douglas flushes and anxiously asks whether Millie spoke to Wendy; Millie denies it.
Douglas reiterates that Millie should leave Wendy alone because Wendy is “not well,” then shows Millie an expensive diamond bracelet he says is inscribed and meant as a gift. Millie watches him take the flowers and bracelet upstairs, leaving Millie unsettled by the contrast between Douglas’s devoted presentation and Wendy’s hidden, distressed isolation.
