Millie wakes up exhausted and drugged from a sleepless night, tormented by images of Douglas Garrick’s corpse. Her head throbs from the sleeping pill hangover as pounding at her front door pulls her fully awake.

When Millie looks through the peephole, she sees a man in a trench coat who identifies himself as Detective Ramirez of the NYPD. Millie opens the door only a crack, careful not to invite him inside, and tries to keep her expression neutral as he begins questioning her.

Detective Ramirez asks whether Millie knows Douglas Garrick, then bluntly informs her that Douglas was murdered the previous night. Ramirez requests that Millie come to the police station immediately and offers her a ride; when Millie hesitates, he says she does not have to go, but strongly implies they will be speaking “one way or another.”

Uneasy, Millie asserts her right to a lawyer. With no one else to call, Millie phones Brock, awkwardly referencing the “stomach bug” lie from the night before before revealing Douglas’s death and the police interview request. Brock agrees to meet her at the station and represent her, and Millie realizes the conversation she has been avoiding with Brock is now unavoidable.
