With her marriage “falling apart,” Wendy decides that retail therapy is the answer and resolves to buy new furniture for the penthouse. She waits until she is back in the city because she considers the island’s options inadequate.

Wendy discovers that Douglas has already had most of his apartment furniture moved into the penthouse without telling her, and she hates it, judging it cheap and mismatched. She tries to explain that cohesive, classic pieces would suit their gothic building, but Douglas seems uninterested and ultimately tells Wendy to get whatever she wants.

As Wendy heads out to shop, she runs into Marybeth Simonds in the lobby. Marybeth, a receptionist at Douglas’s company, is carrying a manila envelope intended for Douglas, who rarely goes into the office and prefers working from coffee shops or their Long Island home.

Marybeth asks if Douglas is in, and Wendy says he is not and refuses to take any paperwork, telling Marybeth to leave it with the doorman. Marybeth then asks where Wendy is headed, and Wendy says she is buying furniture.

Marybeth eagerly offers a business card for her husband, Russell, who manages a small furniture store and could give Wendy a good deal. Wendy takes the card but, as Marybeth leaves, Wendy stops her and insists Marybeth address her as “Mrs. Garrick,” emphasizing their lack of friendship and Wendy’s status as Douglas’s wife.
