Chapter 69
Overview
Detective Rodriguez calls Wendy with a major break: a hidden back-door security camera shows Douglas hadn’t been in the apartment for months and arrived the night of his murder after Millie left. The revelation threatens to unravel Wendy’s framing of Millie and shifts police suspicion toward Wendy. As Wendy scrambles to craft a self-defense narrative and coordinate with Russell, she discovers Russell has been murdered in the bathtub.
Summary
Wendy Garrick, trying to maintain the persona of a grieving widow, answers a call from Detective Rodriguez expecting confirmation that Millie Calloway has been arrested for Douglas Garrick’s murder.
Rodriguez tells Wendy the NYPD could not locate Millie at her apartment despite having an arrest warrant. He then explains new information: the penthouse building manager revealed a hidden security camera at the back entrance, installed with equipment Douglas provided about a year earlier.
After reviewing the footage, Rodriguez says Douglas had not entered the apartment for months, including the entire time Millie worked there, which undermines the affair narrative. More importantly, on the night Douglas was murdered, the video shows Douglas arriving at the back entrance after the doorman saw Millie leaving.
Rodriguez asks Wendy to come to the station to clear up the confusion and offers to send a squad car to her house. Wendy panics, lies that she is not home, then abruptly ends the call, realizing the footage could exonerate Millie and implicate Wendy. Wendy begins planning to pivot to a self-defense story, then calls for Russell Simonds so they can align their accounts.
Wendy rushes to the bathroom, but finds Russell in the tub with a gaping throat wound; the bathwater has turned crimson, and Russell is clearly dead.
