Chapter 68
Overview
Wendy celebrates with Russell, convinced Douglas’s death will make her rich and leave Millie taking the fall. Joseph Bendeck shatters that plan by revealing Douglas changed his will and left everything to charity, forcing Wendy to face eviction and a legal battle. As Wendy reels, the New York Police Department calls, signaling immediate new jeopardy.
Summary
Wendy relaxes in a bathtub with Russell after drinking wine, pleased that Douglas is dead, she expects a huge inheritance, and she believes Millie will take the blame for everything. Feeling victorious and newly secure, Wendy enjoys the calm while Russell grows sleepy and tipsy.
When Wendy’s phone rings, she assumes it is Joseph Bendeck calling about transferring Douglas’s estate. Wendy revels in the power shift, expecting to control Douglas’s assets and, by extension, Joe, whom she believes will now be forced to answer to her.
Joe sounds miserable and bristles at Wendy’s impatience, reminding her Douglas was his best friend and has just been murdered. Wendy pressures him about accessing money quickly, since Douglas canceled her credit cards and she has major expenses, including the penthouse mortgage.
Joe drops a bombshell: Douglas changed his will last month and left everything to charity. Wendy accuses Joe of lying and panics as Joe says he has a notarized copy and relays Douglas’s explanation that he did not want Wendy to inherit.
Wendy vows to fight the will, but Joe tells her she must vacate both the penthouse and the island house because they are being sold. Shaking and trying to regroup, Wendy then receives a new incoming call—from the New York Police Department.
