Chapter 38
Overview
Millie retrieves Wendy’s hidden revolver and confronts Douglas as he strangles Wendy against the wall. Hoping only to scare him, Millie threatens to shoot, but Douglas ignores her and Wendy goes limp. With no other way to stop the attack, Millie fires the gun, escalating the conflict into potentially lethal consequences.
Summary
Remembering where Wendy hid the revolver, Millie races to the bookcase and pulls the hollowed-out dictionary from the shelf. The gun is still inside, and Millie takes it despite her fear that adding a weapon could make everything worse.
Millie tells herself she will not kill Douglas; she only wants to scare him into stopping. Carrying the revolver, Millie returns to the guestroom hallway and is unnerved when the earlier struggle goes silent.
Millie opens the guestroom door and finds Douglas pinning Wendy against the wall with both hands around Wendy’s throat. Wendy’s face is turning blue, and she cannot scream.
Millie orders Douglas to let Wendy go and then points the gun at Douglas’s chest, threatening to shoot. Douglas does not release Wendy, and Wendy’s body goes limp, convincing Millie there is no time left to negotiate.
With Douglas still squeezing Wendy’s neck, Millie pulls the trigger.
