Chapter 15
Overview
Millie discovers a bloodstain on Wendy Garrick’s nightgown while doing laundry in the master bedroom, deepening her fear that Wendy is being harmed. A call from Officer Scavo reveals Xavier Marin won’t press charges and has been released from the hospital, leaving Millie feeling unsafe and still treated as the aggressor. Douglas then corners Millie with personal questions and reacts to the stained nightgown, forcing Millie to lie about what she found.
Summary
While putting away laundry in the cavernous master bedroom of the Garricks’ house, Millie Calloway notices that Wendy Garrick’s clothes are mostly nightgowns. As Millie folds a delicate white nightgown, Millie spots an irregular brown-and-red stain at the collar and recognizes it as dried blood.
Millie’s phone rings with a call from the Bronx police station. Officer Scavo tells Millie that Xavier Marin has decided not to press charges, framing it as “good news.” When Millie insists she wants to press charges against Marin, Scavo says there is a witness who claims Millie attacked Marin and warns that Millie is “lucky” not to be going back to prison; he adds that Marin could still sue her civilly.
Millie asks where Marin is and learns he was never arrested—he was released from the hospital that morning. Realizing Marin will likely return to the apartment building, Millie concludes she cannot safely go back there. Scavo ends by telling Millie to see a psychiatrist and control her “anger issues” or risk prison again.
After Millie hangs up, Douglas Garrick appears in the bedroom doorway. He enters, loosens his tie, and leaves his suit jacket on the dresser, pointedly expecting Millie to hang it up. Douglas studies Millie and abruptly asks if Millie is married and then if Millie has a boyfriend, making Millie uncomfortable.
Douglas’s attention shifts to the nightgown on the bed and the bloodstain at its collar; he seems to react sharply as he stares. To deflect, Millie claims she needs to look up how to remove “tomato sauce” stains, and Douglas approves. Internally, Millie knows she is not dealing with tomato sauce—she is dealing with blood.
