Chapter 5
Overview
Millie leaves a disturbing lecture on the bystander effect and meets Brock, who downplays the Kitty Genovese story but highlights Millie’s instinct to help others. Over dinner plans, Millie describes her new job at Douglas Garrick’s penthouse, and Brock reveals Garrick is Coinstock’s CEO and someone Brock has met before. Brock pressures Millie to move in and meet families, then admits he loves her, while Millie hesitates and again feels watched.
Summary
Millie sits through Professor Kindred’s social psychology lecture about Kitty Genovese’s 1964 murder, which the professor uses to illustrate the bystander effect and diffusion of responsibility. The story unsettles Millie, and she privately imagines how she would intervene if she witnessed an attack, noting she has had to learn better self-control.
Leaving the lecture hall, Millie nearly walks past Brock, remembering they had dinner plans. She tells Brock she is shaken by the idea that dozens of people could watch someone be attacked and do nothing, but Brock insists the case was sensationalized and that fewer people truly witnessed it, with some calling police and a neighbor helping Genovese.
As they walk together, Brock reframes Millie’s distress as proof she is “too nice,” connecting it to her goal of becoming a social worker. Millie thinks about a previous boyfriend who understood her urge to help people “while staying within the confines of the law,” but notes he is no longer around.
Millie then tells Brock about her new job in the Garricks’ penthouse, including the second floor and the closed-off wife she was warned to avoid. Brock is impressed by the apartment’s value and, recognizing the name, tells Millie Douglas Garrick is Coinstock’s CEO and that Brock met him professionally and found him nice.
Brock points out the Garrick building is close to where he lives and resumes pushing Millie to move in, then escalates by saying his parents want to meet her and that he wants to meet her parents. Millie panics internally and avoids explaining her estrangement and hidden past; when Brock says he “kind of” loves her, Millie cannot say it back and senses again that someone is watching her before they continue on to dinner.
