Chapter 64
Overview
At Enzo’s apartment, Millie and Enzo wait for intel that could clear Millie, but learn Russell Simonds has a clean record. The call does uncover a key lead: Russell has a second home at a lake, and Millie wants to confront him while Enzo insists they need police-ready evidence. The chapter ends with a new interruption as Brock calls Millie.
Summary
Millie and Enzo return to Enzo’s small studio apartment near Millie’s place, both exhausted and on edge as Millie worries the police are building a case against her.
As they settle in, Millie asks about Enzo’s work and learns he has taken a landscaping job. They discuss what Enzo’s contact might uncover about Russell Simonds—hoping for a criminal record or something that could help police match fingerprints and clear Millie.
Enzo takes a call from his contact, listens quietly, and writes notes on a paper towel. When he hangs up, Enzo reveals Russell has no prison record and a clean background, which discourages Millie.
Enzo then shares the useful lead: Russell has a second residence at a lake a few hours north of the city. Millie immediately wants to go there to force the truth out, but Enzo argues that confronting Russell could backfire and that they need proof the police will accept.
As Millie pushes to act quickly, her phone rings. She checks the caller ID and tells Enzo it’s Brock.
