Chapter 5
Overview
Carl and Donut’s first contact with three nearby crawlers—Paz, Anton, and Sister Ines, a cat-girl nun—nearly turns into a fight because Anton believes rumors about Carl’s allies and because the show aired a clip of Donut threatening cats like Sister Ines. Sister Ines de-escalates the confrontation and reveals she leads the group’s decisions while Carl gathers intel suggesting they are dangerous but not obvious traitors. The chapter ends with a potential alliance: both parties agree to help each other capture a powerful monk-seal “squad member” on the beach.
Summary
Carl and Princess Donut approach the three crawlers they spotted in the park. Carl examines them and learns they entered together: Paz Lo (a human Santero in full plate armor) and Anton Lopez (a tattooed human Fugitive with a crossbow, player-killer skulls, and a hunter-kill icon) both worship the god Ogun, while Sister Ines Quiteria is a cat girl Poet Laureate carrying a glowing trident. Carl messages Mordecai, who explains Ogun is a common, grumpy god of blacksmiths and protection; followers resist charm and hit harder.
The meeting turns hostile immediately. Anton accuses Carl of being tied to “the goat guy” and the conflict around Osvaldo and Gimli’s death, and he repeatedly focuses his aggression on Donut. Carl tries to de-escalate and offers to split up peacefully, but Anton stays tense and frightened, making Carl suspect something more specific is driving their fear.
Donut fixates on Sister Ines being a “Havana brown” cat girl and interrogates her about being a nun. Sister Ines calmly explains she is a Discalced Carmelite and chose the cat-girl race for charisma and to unlock Poet Laureate, but she did not choose the exact breed; she guesses it may have been randomized or tied to her being Cuban. Donut’s breed rant spikes tensions again until Sister Ines physically and socially reins Anton in, making it clear Sister Ines is the group’s stabilizing authority.
Carl finally learns the cause: Paz reports they saw a show clip where Donut claimed she would kill cats like Sister Ines, which is why they panicked. Donut admits she said it earlier to dungeon entertainers and insists she was exaggerating, not planning murder. While they debate, Carl checks messages: Katia has no warning on this trio, and Tserendolgor (Ren) says Paz and Anton are cousins, protective of Sister Ines, and that Anton previously killed two members of their own group to stop an attack on her; Ren also warns Paz has a powerful directional self-destruct spell.
With the immediate standoff eased, Sister Ines proposes cooperation. She says they need to capture their first “squad member,” explaining monk seals on the beach are dangerous enough that their first attempt nearly killed Paz, forcing them to kill the creature instead. She offers a trade: if Carl and Donut help them capture a seal, they will help Carl and Donut capture one as well.
