Chapter 33
Overview
The Night Wyrm confirms Astrid’s assassination and orders her body delivered to the Guild of Suffering, exposing the guild leader’s cold betrayal of his own wife. With the Desperado Club collapsing under the level-225 demon Minge, Carl learns what “vorpals” really are and deliberately triggers their release as a demon-killing failsafe. Katia completes the quest and secures the orchid, while the newly freed vorpals tear Minge apart and the survivors flee upstairs to regroup for the next looming obligation.
Summary
The Night Wyrm’s hissing voice announces a job update: Astrid is dead, and the body must be brought to the Guild of Suffering, with payment going to whoever delivers it. Carl reels at the brutality of how easily Astrid died and the revelation that the guild leader is Astrid’s husband. Katia shifts back to human form, stores Astrid’s doll-sized body in her inventory, and urges returning upstairs before the Desperado Club collapses under the rampage of the level-225 demon Minge.
Carl tells Katia to take the secret bathroom stairwell and finish the quest while Carl stays behind to “figure something out.” Carl messages Mordecai to ask about “vorpals” and learns they are deputized celestial suicide-bombers drawn to demons; they become stronger and more aggressive near demons and can explode if threatened. Realizing the club’s demon traps were meant to keep demons away from the hidden vorpals, Carl prepares to unleash them as a desperate countermeasure.
As Minge’s arms tear through the bar and into the kitchens, Carl deploys spider automatons and directs trapped kitchen NPCs to escape via the hidden women’s-bathroom stairwell. Samantha floats into the kitchens acting casual while she “dates” bartender Charles Ellis, who is painfully stuck inside her neck-hole storage space. When Samantha taunts Minge, an arm grabs Charles and rips him in half, ending the “courtship” in a spray of blood; Samantha shrieks in outrage while more NPCs are seized and killed.
Carl sends a modified door-opening bot down the hidden hallway to dismantle Carl’s own bracing and release the vorpals, then sends additional spider bots out with holy-water-infused effects. Katia reports the quest success and that she has the orchid, confirming the assassination objective is complete and prompting the Night Wyrm to demand Carl come to him for more work. Carl’s bots briefly force Minge to recoil in pain, giving Carl the opening to flee toward the stairwell and order Samantha to follow.
In the bathroom stairwell, Carl hears the telltale shrieking as the automaton is destroyed and the vorpals get out; crocodilian guards warn everyone to run because the vorpals are worse than demons. On the top level, Samantha explains the Nothing tear happened during a knife game and identifies Minge as Slit’s little sister. In the crowded strip-club shelter, Katia hugs Carl and confirms the orchid is secured but refuses to eat it until they reach the ninth floor; Carl privately focuses on the next step—making Odette their adjutant. The building shakes as a vorpal attack kills Minge below, spraying yellow fluid upward; with Minge dead, Samantha declares the disaster a great night out.
