Chapter 14
Overview
Carl executes a night gauntlet run to the graveyard temple, using a custom stun-smoke bomb and Bomo’s missile armor to force a path through faster, shrieking ghommids while Paz is repeatedly immobilized by Terrified. Carl barely makes it inside after flagging a rare, high-level splitter monster into a totem card that will auto-fill an empty squad slot.
Inside, Asojano wards the temple and summons the ominous Sun of Reawakening, demanding his shrine be rebuilt. Paz and Anton are immediately hit with a conflicting quest from Ogun to repair Ogun’s anvil shrine instead, creating a forced choice that may require killing Asojano to avoid divine punishment.
Summary
Carl briefs Paz, Anton, and Sister Ines on a night-run plan: exit the building, throw a widened-area stun bomb into the ghommid mass without hitting Asojano, sprint to the graveyard temple, then guard while Paz and Anton repair Asojano’s shrine. Carl also outfits Bomo with heavy break-apart armor and shoulder-mounted missiles made from smoke mantles and anti-undead parts, while noting a contingency if empowering Asojano goes wrong.
Once outside, the night-charged ghommids glow blue and surge faster, wailing loudly. Paz is repeatedly hit with a Terrified debuff that roots him in place, forcing Bomo to carry him; Carl has Paz unequip his breastplate to reduce the carried weight. Carl detonates the large stun-smoke bomb behind them, freezing many undead, while Asojano stands in the street radiating sickly green power that repels ghommids but threatens to afflict the party if approached too closely.
Bomo fires smoke missiles to clear lanes as the group pushes toward the open temple doorway. Donut attempts a bard buff and briefly boosts party dexterity, but the song collapses and the system mutes her. Near the entrance, Carl uses Daughter’s Kiss on a fast, high-level donkey-headed ghommid that splits into multiple threatening parts; Sister Ines’s bolt nearly finishes it, and the party funnels into the temple while Carl holds the rear.
Outside the doorway, the AI inflicts Carl with Terrified and mocks him, freezing his legs as the splitter closes. Carl counters by stabbing it with a flag, killing it and tumbling backward into the temple as the debuff ends. Inside, Asojano claims he has cast a temporary ward that prevents ghommids from entering; he directs Paz (as “Santero”) to rebuild his green-glowing shrine.
Carl discovers the splitter became a new rare totem card: T’Ghee Card, “Skylar Spinach,” a level 66 non-corporeal affliction-dealer with Terrifier and Splitter traits, and the card warns it will auto-fill an empty squad slot. As they assess the temple’s seven ruined shrines, a hot, skull-shaped gem manifests: the Sun of Reawakening, which Asojano forbids anyone from touching until his shrine is rebuilt. Then Paz and Anton receive a conflicting quest from their god Ogun: they are required to repair Ogun’s broken anvil shrine instead of Asojano’s or be smitten, forcing the group to consider killing Asojano while Paz and Anton start fitting the heated metal pieces together—just as ominous music begins.
