Chapter 36

Overview

Odette shocks the audience by announcing she is entering the dungeon and will attempt the Celestial Ascendency as the re-ascended vulture goddess Nekhebit, reframing the interview as a strategic public move against rival power players. With Odette no longer available, Carl and Donut must pick a new adjutant from the remaining candidates.

After probing the options and distrusting the Valtay-linked Drick, Carl chooses the hard-edged Skull Empire judge Baroness Victory, despite her personal ties to deaths connected to Carl’s past battles. The chapter ends with an unsettling disruption when Harbinger abruptly vanishes mid-show.

Summary

Carl presses Odette on why she cannot serve as Carl and Donut’s adjutant. Odette announces to the live audience that her show will go on hiatus because she is entering the dungeon herself: she has sponsored a deity and will attempt the Celestial Ascendency.

Odette reveals her chosen deity via a recorded crawl clip: a team of crawlers hatches an egg, triggering a “Quest Complete” and a system message that Nekhebit has re-ascended. The display shifts to a rotating, scarred, battle-worn vulture goddess in tattered finery, and Odette confirms she will perform as Nekhebit, whose story centers on betrayal and revenge. Carl feels sick, realizing the interview is also a press conference meant to counter Huanxin’s plans, and he hopes the deal to save Katia still holds.

Odette returns to the immediate business of selecting an adjutant and presents the three remaining candidates: Ripper Wonton, a quokka media host; Baroness Victory, an orc attorney and judge formerly of the Skull Empire; and Drick, a Dream elf body with a Valtay worm-head. During the discussion, Carl notices a major HUD flash suppressed by the show, and Harbinger abruptly blinks out and disappears without explanation, drawing confused looks in the room.

Carl questions each candidate’s qualifications and, in particular, whether Drick can serve despite being Valtay. Weighing Donut’s preference for Ripper against Quasar’s strong support for Baroness Victory, Carl confronts the orc directly about whether Carl has killed any of her family. Baroness Victory admits Carl has killed relations and that her half-sister Queen Ugloo is dead, but insists she can be impartial and notes she is the only candidate the others tried to sue out of the role. Carl chooses Baroness Victory as their adjutant.
