Chapter 58
Overview
Carl teleports into burning Havana and infiltrates the capitol fight between Ren and Quan, leveraging Donut’s ongoing duende combat to inject her summoned totems into Quan’s card battle. A demon-prince incursion is announced as Amayon enters the realm, escalating the floor-wide threat and tying into Carl’s quest about Geyrun’s murder. Quan counters by flipping control of the totems, causing Ren’s summoned Mongolian Death Worm to turn on her team and kill Chuluuna, but Quan is ultimately stripped, debuffed, and finished off after Carl returns a personal ring.
Donut gets credit for the kill and unexpectedly receives both exit keys, yet the victory is immediately complicated when the capitol stairwell door begins collapsing, threatening to destroy the key’s value within minutes.
Summary
Carl teleports into Havana on top of his spider automaton trap, crushing it, while Samantha appears beside him. The city is burning and chaotic, but the immediate entryway is clear. Donut reports she is still locked in combat with duendes and can summon totems from her deck; Carl positions the red “Loop-De-Loop” emergency swap trap to potentially trade places with Donut if needed, then goes invisible and moves toward the capitol building where Ren and Quan are fighting.
Inside, Carl assesses the card-battle: Quan floats near the ceiling, repeatedly birthing pox slugs, while Ren holds the stairwell door with Chuluuna and her tank pet Garret. A major area alert interrupts everything as the Madre de Aguas falls to zombism, letting the demon prince Amayon slip into the realm; Carl gains a temporary effect converting his fire spells to Sheol fire, and a quest update urges him to question Amayon about Geyrun’s murder. Before Carl can act on it, Chuluuna’s Chain Lightning hits Quan’s side but Quan’s defenses hold, and Quan plays cards to stabilize and add more totems.
Carl signals Donut to send her totems into this separate fight as an exploit, hoping Quan cannot snare them. Carl hits Quan with a sticky hob-lobber, knocking him down and weakening his shields, while Samantha bites and clings to him to disrupt casting. Ren summons Basquiat, the Mongolian Death Worm, and grants it Temporary Immortality, but Quan immediately plays a consumable that swaps team ownership of the active totems, turning the death worm against Ren’s group.
The stolen death worm rapidly devours Quan’s former totems, then attacks the room’s occupants: Lazarus (combined with Skylar Spinach) arrives alongside Jola the Yule Cat, but the worm erupts under Lazarus and swallows him whole. Chuluuna is killed in the ensuing chaos, and the worm vomits gore and remains back onto the floor. Because Lazarus was combined with the splitter ghommid, his death produces upgraded returns: Uzi Jesus – Gold Edition and Lord of Blight – Gold Edition (Asojano’s gold form), who immediately focus on Quan.
Jola uses Fashion Critic to strip Quan’s gear off, and Carl quickly loots Quan’s magical cloak into his inventory before Jola can eat it. Uzi Jesus’s Bullet Hell and Asojano’s debuffs leave Quan blind and unable to heal, and Donut ends her duende fight, causing her summoned totems to vanish. Quan remains barely alive long enough to plead “give it back,” and Carl realizes Quan means a ring Carl took earlier; Carl returns the “For Daddy” ring to Quan’s hand, then Quan dies. Donut receives kill credit and, unexpectedly, both exit keys, but a warning appears: the stairwell door at El Capitolio Nacional de Cuba is badly damaged and will become unusable in five minutes, meaning the associated key will dissipate if the doorway collapses. Khulan arrives too late and collapses over Chuluuna’s body as the room continues to crumble.
