Chapter 44
Overview
Carl and Donut arrive at the nine-token final fight zone and discover a trailer yard that has been deliberately spliced from a different time, complete with a token machine and a silhouette that points toward Carl’s father as the intended opponent. Carl confirms the dungeon is “cheating” by inserting a seasonal, dust-covered rectangle into the snowy floor and by cutting objects cleanly between instances.
Realizing items looted here can be kept, Carl strips the yard—most notably taking his father’s motorcycle—before triggering warnings that the fight starts after a countdown and that physics behave differently inside. Concluding the dungeon wants him to see something specific, Carl sends Donut back and enters the trailer alone.
Summary
Carl and Princess Donut push through the north side of the floating Iowa chunk, killing zombie farm animals as they approach the final token fight zone. Donut complains about yet another undead horde, clearly trying to distract Carl from what he expects is coming.
They reach a dilapidated trailer yard and find a vending-machine-like token station labeled One Fight for Nine Tokens, with fine print warning that leaving will require nine more tokens to reactivate—and that only nine exist in the area. Carl also spots a motorcycle that makes the dread real: it resembles his father’s prized Harley, and the silhouette logo on the machine looks like Carl (and by implication, like his father, too).
Carl realizes the scene is “wrong.” Unlike the surrounding snow-melted environment, the trailer yard is dusty, overgrown, and clearly from a different season. He notices precise cut lines where objects are spliced in half between two versions of the world, and even duplicate bicycles appear on both sides, confirming the dungeon is cheating by inserting a different time slice into this small rectangle.
Testing the rules, Carl loots the motorcycle and finds it goes into his permanent inventory category rather than the temporary floor storage. He rapidly strips the yard for anything useful—bikes, appliances, tools, gardening supplies, even trying and failing to fully lift a Ford truck he hopes could be salvaged for Katia—while Donut stays quiet and keeps Mongo from chasing a zombie cow out of the zone.
When Carl touches the trailer door, system warnings appear: the fight will not start for 42 minutes and 30 seconds; the area exists in a different time instance; and physical interactions work differently here. Convinced the dungeon wants him to witness something specific, Carl tells Donut to stay back, accepts he needs to face it, and enters the trailer alone as the landscape rumbles in the distance.
