Chapter 15
Overview
Ron learns that Suzi has sent Kendrick to stay with Jason after Danny Lloyd supposedly left, but he quickly realizes Jason and Kendrick are hiding a more serious incident. The concealment makes Ron confront his age and his shifting place in the family, as he fears Danny remains dangerous and that another conflict is coming.
Before Ron can press further, Joyce summons him to Fairhaven with news that Nick Silver may be dead. The message reconnects Ron to Elizabeth and Joyce’s investigation and jolts him out of self-pity, sending him back into action despite his physical frailty.
Summary
Ron lies on the sofa recovering while Kendrick builds a Lego Death Star and Jason brings Ron tea. Jason explains that Suzi called to say Danny has left her and asked Jason to keep Kendrick for a day or two. Although Jason presents it as a simple separation, Ron immediately doubts the story because Danny is not the kind of man to leave quietly and generously.
Ron begins questioning Kendrick in front of Jason, trying different angles to discover whether there was a fight or some kind of violence the night before. Kendrick insists there was no noise and that Danny left with a case, but Ron recognizes that both Jason and Kendrick are lying to protect him. From their determination to conceal the truth, Ron concludes that something bad has happened and that Danny may still be a serious threat.
The deception affects Ron in two ways. He feels loved because his family is trying to shield him, but he also feels old and diminished because he used to be the protector and now his children and grandson are protecting him. As Ron thinks about Suzi, Danny’s history, and Kendrick being kept out of school, he becomes certain that the situation is not over and worries that he may no longer be strong enough for the fight ahead.
Ron tells Kendrick he can stay as long as he wants, and Jason suggests staying through the weekend. Ron reassures Jason that he is ready to help if needed, even as he privately wonders whether he still has any real strength or usefulness left. The family moment briefly restores some of Ron’s sense of purpose.
Then Joyce texts Ron, saying that she and Elizabeth have been in Fairhaven, have broken into an office, and that Nick Silver may be dead. The message pulls Ron back into the wider mystery at once. Despite his headache and physical weakness, Ron gets up, tells Jason and Kendrick they can stay at his house, and heads to meet Joyce and Elizabeth on Hampton Road, energized by the prospect of trouble.
