Chapter 65
Overview
Elizabeth, conscious of her own limits, leans on the group's combined strengths as they confront Davey Noakes about his secret meeting with Holly Lewis. Joanna's blunt questioning initially stalls, but Elizabeth changes the tone and gets Davey talking about the Bitcoin, Holly's murder, and Nick Silver's disappearance. By the end, Davey claims he can identify Holly's killer and suggests that answer is tied to Nick, setting up a major breakthrough in the case.
Summary
Elizabeth reflects that she has not been at her sharpest during the case, weakened by age, rustiness, and grief. Even so, Elizabeth reminds herself that she no longer has to solve everything alone, because she now works as part of a team. Late at night, Elizabeth sits with Joyce, Paul, Ibrahim, and Joanna in Davey Noakes's house, aware that Ron and Connie have vanished with the recovered Bitcoin key and that Joanna's discovery of Holly Lewis secretly meeting Davey has become their best lead. Donna keeps messaging Elizabeth, but Elizabeth ignores the messages because the group is focused on confronting Davey.
Joanna begins aggressively by asking why Davey met Holly at The Compound on the Thursday morning. Davey resists the direct approach and suggests the question is not automatically Joanna's business. Sensing that Joanna's tactic is not working, Elizabeth intervenes, politely shifts control of the conversation, and invites Davey to ask his own questions first. Joanna accepts the adjustment, and Elizabeth's softer handling immediately makes Davey more cooperative.
Davey first asks whether the group has the Bitcoin, and Elizabeth says that they do. Davey then asks whether they cracked both codes and where the Bitcoin is now, while Ibrahim proudly explains that the codes were solved through work, imagination, brute force, and some luck. Joanna asks whether Davey himself would want to buy the Bitcoin, but Davey says he mainly wants to know that it is safe. The conversation briefly drifts into small talk with Joyce, Paul, and Ibrahim, while Joanna grows impatient with the slower pace.
When Joanna pushes for more, Davey asks what the group actually intends to do with the Bitcoin. Elizabeth answers that they want to use it to find Holly's killer and understand what happened to Nick Silver. Davey then says he can help with both matters. He offers to make tea, takes Joyce into the kitchen to chat, and promises that when he returns he will tell them exactly who killed Holly Lewis. When Elizabeth asks whether Davey also knows where Nick is, Davey says he cannot be certain, but he suspects Nick's whereabouts are closely connected to Holly's murder.
