Chapter 45
Overview
Connie takes Tia to Ibrahim after the robbery collapses and asks him to hide her from the police. Ibrahim forces Connie to admit that she pushed Tia into armed crime and challenges the way Connie has tried to remake Tia in her own image. The chapter becomes a moral turning point for both women, ending with Connie’s genuine remorse and Ibrahim’s decision to protect Tia and help redirect her future.
Summary
After the failed robbery, Connie brings Tia to Ibrahim’s flat at Coopers Chase and asks him to hide her. Ibrahim immediately questions why Tia needs to be hidden and refuses to help unless Connie tells him the truth. Connie tries to brush the matter aside, but Ibrahim insists on due diligence and asks Tia directly what has happened.
When Connie tells Tia to show Ibrahim the gun, Tia puts it on the table. Connie then explains what happened: Tia robbed a warehouse as part of her new "job," threatened staff with a gun, took a van loaded with Rolexes, and escaped only after a remote security system disabled the vehicle and forced her to flee on foot. Connie adds that Tia’s accomplice was arrested and that she brought Tia to Ibrahim because she trusts him to keep Tia safe.
Ibrahim turns his anger on Connie rather than Tia. He makes Connie admit that she encouraged the robbery and expected a share of the proceeds, then condemns her for pushing an eighteen-year-old into armed crime after all the work they have done together. Connie tries to defend herself by treating the robbery as a learning experience and by thinking that Tia could build a successful criminal life from this mistake, but Ibrahim tells Connie that she is repeating the chaos of her own life and shaping Tia into a version of herself because she liked the power.
When Ibrahim says that Connie has made him sad, Connie is shaken in a way anger would not have achieved. She realizes that she truly is sorry and, at Ibrahim’s prompting, apologizes to Tia instead of to him. Connie then breaks down crying, and Ibrahim comforts her. The chapter ends with Ibrahim agreeing to hide Tia for now and then help her, turning the immediate goal from escape to rescue.
