Chapter 5
Overview
Elizabeth confirms that Nick Silver's fear is real when she sees evidence of a professional bomb under his car. Nick reveals that he and Holly Lewis control valuable cold-storage codes known only to a few people, linking the threat to Davey Noakes, Lord Townes, or possibly Holly herself.
The encounter matters because it draws Elizabeth back into active investigation despite her grief for Stephen. By the end of the chapter, a new mystery is established and Elizabeth chooses to step toward it rather than retreat from life.
Summary
At Joanna and Paul's wedding reception, Elizabeth studies photographs on Nick Silver's phone and concludes that a black box fixed under his Lexus appears to be a professional car bomb. Nick explains that he found it while checking for trackers, because security is part of his work, and admits he left the bomb where it was because he still came to the wedding.
Elizabeth presses Nick to stop circling the story and give her the essential problem first. Nick finally says that someone wants something he and his business partner, Holly Lewis, have: a valuable six-digit code. Nick says his own code exists only in his head, with a copy sealed in a distant solicitor's office to be released only if he dies, and he says Holly's code is protected the same way.
Nick then explains that he owns a security company with Holly that specializes in cold storage. Earlier that week, they told only two outsiders about something very valuable they are hiding there: Davey Noakes, a former drug dealer turned tech criminal, and Lord Townes, a banker. Because those two men are the only outsiders who know about the hidden asset, Nick believes one of them must be behind the bomb.
Elizabeth immediately widens the field, pointing out that Holly also knows what is hidden and therefore cannot be ruled out. Before Nick can explain more, Paul comes outside to fetch him for the cake cutting. Nick asks Elizabeth to visit him the next day so he can tell her exactly why one of the suspects might want him dead, and he gives her a business card with an address and time.
After Nick returns to the party, Elizabeth reflects that accepting this invitation means letting real life back in, something she has resisted since Stephen's death. Yet the combination of a code, a bomb, and three suspects revives her sense of purpose. Looking up at the stars, she speaks to Stephen and acknowledges that she may be needed again.
