Chapter 60
Overview
Ron insists on accompanying Connie down into The Compound to retrieve the paper connected to the stolen Bitcoin fortune, despite the obvious danger. Their tense but oddly intimate conversation shows that Connie remains dangerous yet is choosing, for now, to help. The chapter reinforces Ron's determination to see the plan through and underlines that obtaining the paper may force Holly's killer into the open.
Summary
As Ron and Connie descend in a small metal cage toward The Compound, the narration explains that the group had argued over who should accompany Connie, but Ron refused to let anyone else go. Elizabeth had mocked the risk of Ron riding alone with a woman who had threatened to kill him in order to collect a scrap of paper worth a quarter of a billion pounds, yet Ron went ahead anyway.
During the descent, Ron and Connie fill the claustrophobic silence with strained, joking conversation about football, James Bond, Jason, Bogdan, and Donna. The banter softens the moment but never removes the danger, because Connie still speaks casually about killing Ron and reminds him that she is capable of violence. Even so, the exchange shows an uneasy trust forming between them as they continue downward together.
Ron then asks Connie what she and Ibrahim talk about, and Connie admits she does not know exactly, only that she always feels better afterward. Ron agrees, and Connie says Ibrahim's gift is that he genuinely likes people, even people like them. The conversation briefly shifts from suspicion to reflection, revealing how much Ibrahim's calm humanity affects both of them.
As the light flickers and the cage nears its destination, Ron asks whether Connie would really have killed him, and Connie says yes. They then return to the central stakes: when Connie asks who killed Holly, Ron says Elizabeth believes the killer will reveal themselves once Elizabeth has the piece of paper. Connie offers Ron one last chance to back out and let her fetch it alone, but Ron says it is far too late for that. When the cage arrives, Ron sees Bill Benson waiting beyond the grille and thanks Connie for helping despite everything; Connie replies that she owes someone a good deed, and Bill opens the cage.
