Chapter 59
Overview
Danny Lloyd returns from Portugal after a hired killer fails to murder Jason Ritchie, and Danny immediately decides he needs to be back on home ground to control events himself. The failed attack raises the stakes because Jason is now alerted, while Danny’s attention shifts toward a new, tempting opportunity that may redirect the danger he poses.
Summary
Danny Lloyd flies back to Stansted from Portugal after the man he paid to kill Jason Ritchie fails to finish the job. Danny should be furious about the failed hit and about being stuck in an economy seat, but Danny is more focused on regaining control quickly because Danny now believes leaving the country was a mistake.
As Danny thinks through the situation, Danny decides to head for the South Coast, where Danny has contacts and other business to manage while waiting for someone competent to deal with Jason. Danny reflects that his priorities have changed fast: the urgent plan had been to kill Jason and Suzi, but a new and more exciting opportunity has overtaken that obsession.
Even so, Danny knows Jason must still die, especially now that Jason will know someone came for him. Danny does not claim to fear Jason, but Danny recognizes that the failed attempt has made the situation more dangerous and requires caution. The chapter closes by reinforcing Danny’s volatility and menace as Danny threatens the passenger beside him, recalls trying to take cocaine in the plane toilet, and settles in to sleep, pleased by whatever plans or fantasies now occupy him.
