Donna De Freitas is pulled away from a hoped-for lazy day with Bogdan and assigned to extra security patrols in Fairhaven because of an upcoming royal visit. Donna is already irritated that Chris is away on firearms training, which she envies, and the patrol work feels especially pointless as officers are told to look for anything suspicious while knowing almost nothing about the visit itself.

As Donna walks the high street, she reflects on the previous night’s wedding for Joyce’s daughter and on how she habitually checks people’s backgrounds, including the groom, Paul Brett. The morning has produced almost no real police action, aside from a flimsy report from a man who thought a gun had been pointed at him and then withdrew the complaint.

Elizabeth calls Donna, and Donna is struck by how direct she sounds compared with her quieter recent demeanor while grieving. Elizabeth immediately asks about the royal-visit patrols and matter-of-factly reveals that the visitor is the new Duke of Edinburgh, correcting Donna’s confusion about Prince Edward’s title.

Elizabeth then says she wants to report a break-in. In her usual cutting style, she tells Donna that she and Joyce have seen a man climbing through a window at 8b Templar Street and insists the intruder may still be inside, so Donna needs to come there at once. When Donna protests that Elizabeth should ring the police, Elizabeth sharply reminds Donna that she is the police.

Donna agrees to come, amused and pleased by the return of Elizabeth’s old brisk, dismissive manner. Donna even suspects Elizabeth may have been involved in the earlier false gun alarm at Mad about the Soy, but Elizabeth hangs up before answering, leaving Donna grinning as she heads toward the reported break-in.
