Chapter 54
Overview
Bill Benson escorts a visibly nervous Lord Townes into Nick Silver’s underground vault, where Lord Townes retrieves a small wooden box from safe 816. Bill’s brief glimpse of the box, and his suspicion that the visit may connect to Holly Lewis, turns an otherwise routine vault stop into a potentially important lead.
The chapter also quietly adds another point of interest: Davey Noakes visited the vault earlier in the week, and Bill now thinks Ron should know. These secretive visits suggest that hidden items in Nick Silver’s facility may be central to the wider mystery.
Summary
Bill Benson opens the old mining cage at the Compound and escorts Lord Townes down to the underground vault. During the descent, Bill tries his usual small talk, but Lord Townes is tense and sweating. Because of the ongoing investigation around Nick Silver and Holly Lewis, Bill has already left Ron a message to say Lord Townes has arrived.
At the vault, Bill and Lord Townes complete the dual security checks, and Bill opens the heavy door. Bill turns away to give Lord Townes privacy while Lord Townes goes to safe 816, enters the code, and removes an item. Although Bill knows he should not look, he briefly glances over and sees Lord Townes place a small wooden box into his bag.
Bill immediately wonders whether the visit might connect to Holly Lewis, because Lord Townes’s secrecy and nervousness make the retrieval seem important. Lord Townes closes the safe, says he is ready, and Bill seals the vault again without asking questions.
As they return to the cage, Bill reflects on how little curiosity he usually has about what people store in the safes, believing people are entitled to secrets. Even so, he notices that this week has been unusually busy by his standards: Lord Townes has come today, and Davey Noakes visited on Saturday. Bill realizes he probably should have told Ron about Davey as well.
On the ascent, Lord Townes seems much calmer now that he has recovered whatever he came for. The change suggests that the box mattered a great deal to him. Only once the item is safely in his possession does Lord Townes finally relax enough to make ordinary conversation, asking Bill whether he watched the darts the previous night.
