Chapter 37
Overview
Meeting in the hot tub, the friends reassess Holly Lewis’s murder and begin taking seriously the possibility that Nick Silver staged his own disappearance. Ibrahim keeps pursuing the Bitcoin trail through the missing codes, the mystery solicitor, and possible access to the vault, while Elizabeth insists the murder suspects still include Davey Noakes, Lord Townes, and Jill Usher. The chapter also turns inward for Ron, revealing that his growing worry about Suzi, Danny, and Jason is distracting him from the case and may soon force a family confrontation.
Summary
The Thursday Murder Club meets early in the retirement village hot tub, and Ron pushes a new line of thinking about Holly Lewis’s death and Nick Silver’s disappearance. Ron argues that the sequence of events around Nick feels too neat: someone supposedly tries to kill Nick, a bomb disappears, Nick’s office is trashed, a Post-it note appears, and then Nick vanishes just before Holly is killed. Joyce resists the idea because Nick was Paul’s best man, but Elizabeth admits Ron’s theory is plausible.
Ibrahim tries to redirect the discussion toward the Bitcoin fortune, pointing out that Ron knows Bill Benson and Connie Johnson is a client of The Compound, which could help them reach the vault. Ron flatly refuses to work with Connie because of their history, and Elizabeth says access to the vault is useless unless they first find Holly and Nick’s codes. The group returns to the murder inquiry, keeping Nick, Davey Noakes, Lord Townes, and Jill Usher in play as suspects, while Ibrahim reports that his mass email search for the mystery solicitor has produced mostly out-of-office replies so far.
As the conversation continues, Ron realizes his heart is not fully in the Holly Lewis case despite its high stakes. While the others relax, Ron watches other residents in the pool and drifts into reflection. The mood shifts when Joyce mentions how nice it was to see Kendrick, and Ibrahim notes that Suzi did not come to collect him.
Ron dismisses concern out loud, but privately he understands why he cannot focus: he thinks something is wrong with Suzi and Danny, and Jason is not telling him the truth. Ron decides he will not accept being kept in the dark or "protected." Before he can give full attention to the murders, Ron resolves to confront Jason and sort out whatever is happening in his family.
