Chapter 49
Overview
While hiding in Ron’s flat, Kendrick overhears Chris and Donna question Ron and Jason about the shooting at Jason’s house and Danny Lloyd’s disappearance. Ron and Jason close ranks behind the Ritchie family code against informing, refusing to help even though a gunman is still loose. The chapter matters because Kendrick’s loyalty begins to strain: he admires his family’s toughness, but starts to doubt the moral logic of their silence after recent violence.
Summary
Kendrick stays in Ron’s small flat and listens from the spare bedroom after Chris and Donna arrive to question Jason. Ron has already sent Kendrick and Tia out of the room, but Kendrick remains close enough to hear. Chris states plainly that somebody shot through Jason’s front door in broad daylight, while Jason avoids confirming more than that he heard something.
Chris and Donna add that neighbours saw Jason and Kendrick fleeing over Jason’s back fence into the woods. Jason tries to explain this away as a routine walk after homework, and Ron blocks further questions by calling Kendrick’s presence family business rather than police business. Listening in, Kendrick remembers his mother’s black eye and gun and realizes that Donna’s phrase "family falling-out" does not begin to cover what has happened.
The officers press harder by raising Danny Lloyd’s disappearance and asking whether Danny sent the shooter. Ron and Jason respond with jokes, evasions, and the Ritchie family rule that they do not inform on anyone. Chris argues that there is an armed person still at large and asks them, at least as friends, to help stop something worse from happening, but Ron says he cannot give them anything.
Donna points out that Ron and Jason have helped the police before, yet Ron insists this is different because they are dealing with the Ritchie family, not the Thursday Murder Club. Chris warns Ron not to do anything foolish and makes it clear that he is genuinely worried for Ron’s safety. After Ron refuses one last time, Kendrick feels proud of his grandfather’s resolve, but the conversation leaves him unsettled because he now understands that speaking to the police cannot really be the worst crime of all.
