Chapter 66
Overview
Ron deliberately separates himself from the group and waits in Pauline's darkened flat for whoever has been following him, carrying the paper that represents the missing Bitcoin fortune. The chapter reveals how far Ron is willing to go to protect his family and solve the case on his own, even if it costs him his life. The tension breaks when Danny Lloyd enters with a gun, turning Ron's private gamble into an immediate mortal threat.
Summary
Ron waits in darkness in Pauline's flat with the lights off and curtains drawn because he believes someone followed him there. He is frightened, but he has decided he is done being frightened and is willing to face whatever comes next.
Pauline stays despite Ron's warnings that she should leave. She keeps quiet, agrees not to distract herself with bingo on her phone, and then slips into the bedroom when they hear footsteps in the hallway, after wishing Ron luck.
While he waits, Ron reflects that the others do not know where he is because his phone is off and Pauline has been lying to Joyce for him. Ron knows the Thursday Murder Club would come immediately if they knew his location, and he is certain Elizabeth would be furious about what he is attempting alone.
Ron thinks about why he has chosen to act without them. He sees this as his own story: an old man still trying to prove he can protect his family, even at the risk of his life.
When Ron hears someone picking the lock, he grips the small piece of paper worth a quarter of a billion pounds and moves it from his right jeans pocket to his left. The intruder enters, switches on the light, and Ron finds himself staring at a gun as Danny Lloyd reveals himself, confirming Ron's fears.
