Chapter 2
Overview
At Joanna’s wedding reception, Elizabeth’s grief over Stephen still isolates her, but an uneasy feeling tells her that something is wrong. The wedding’s best man, Nick Silver, secretly approaches Elizabeth and reveals that someone tried to kill him that morning and that several people may have reason to want him dead. By asking Elizabeth for help instead of the police, Nick pulls Elizabeth back toward the kind of dangerous problem-solving she has been unable to face since Stephen’s death.
Summary
At Joanna and Paul’s wedding reception, Elizabeth sits on the terrace with Ron, Ibrahim, and Joyce as they watch the sunset and discuss the day. Ron and Ibrahim joke about the best man’s disastrous speech and vomiting, while Elizabeth quietly reflects on how odd the man had seemed earlier. Elizabeth is still deep in grief after Stephen’s death, but Joyce’s gentle support helps Elizabeth endure the evening.
Joanna comes outside to collect the group for dancing and confirms that the best man, Nick, is recovering. The others head back inside, but Elizabeth stays behind alone. As Elizabeth thinks about grief, Stephen, and Joyce’s kindness over the past year, Elizabeth becomes aware that her instincts are sharpening again, and Elizabeth realizes that the uneasy feeling from earlier came from someone watching from the trees.
Nick Silver steps out of the shadows and joins Elizabeth on the terrace. After some cautious conversation, Nick tells Elizabeth that someone tried to kill him that morning. Elizabeth immediately becomes alert and engaged in a way Elizabeth has not felt since Stephen’s death, and Elizabeth begins questioning Nick about whether the threat is real, whether he has proof, and whether anyone has a clear motive.
Nick says he has proof on his phone and admits that more than one person may want him dead, with good reason. Nick refuses to go to the police and explains that Paul has told him about Elizabeth’s reputation. Frightened and desperate, Nick asks whether, if he tells Elizabeth everything, Elizabeth knows someone who can help him.
Elizabeth realizes that attending the wedding has unexpectedly drawn Elizabeth back into danger and purpose. Instead of retreating further into grief, Elizabeth chooses to step toward this new problem. Taking Nick’s hand, Elizabeth tells him that Elizabeth does know someone who can help, marking Elizabeth’s return to action.
