Chapter 7
Overview
After another assault, Suzi finally refuses to endure Danny Lloyd’s abuse and uses Danny’s own gun to force him out of the house for good. By photographing her injuries and sending the image to her brother Jason in Fairhaven, Suzi turns a private pattern of violence into a crisis with witnesses and consequences. Danny leaves making explicit murder threats, so the chapter both frees Suzi and Kendrick from his immediate control and raises the danger surrounding Fairhaven.
Summary
Danny Lloyd faces a gun in his own house after violently attacking his wife, Suzi, again. Danny recognizes the Beretta as one of his hidden weapons and, after the first shock passes, assumes Suzi will not actually shoot him. He tries to manage the situation with excuses, false calm, and familiar promises, while privately dismissing her pain and already thinking about how to punish her later.
Suzi refuses to accept another apology. She tells Danny that fifteen years of beatings have broken her and that she will not let him raise their son, Kendrick, in a house ruled by fear. When Danny argues that the house is his, Suzi reminds him that it is legally in her name and makes clear that this time she is not pretending the abuse did not happen.
Suzi then reveals that she has already packed Danny a suitcase. More importantly, she takes a selfie of her bruised face and sends it to her brother, Jason Ritchie, who is in Fairhaven. By doing this, Suzi creates immediate consequences and real protection for herself. She tells Danny to disappear before Jason arrives and warns that if Danny ever returns, or if anything happens to her or Kendrick, Danny is finished.
Kendrick comes downstairs during the standoff and sees his mother holding the gun. Suzi tries to keep him calm, but she also plainly tells him that Danny is leaving and not coming back. Kendrick asks his mother to promise, and Kendrick seems relieved when Suzi does. The moment shows that Kendrick understands more about the household than Danny wants to admit.
Suzi walks Danny to the door at gunpoint and confirms that his suitcase contains passports. Danny leaves while threatening to kill both Suzi and Jason later, already imagining revenge and escape abroad. Even so, Suzi has forced a real break at last: Danny is out of the house, Kendrick stays with his mother, and the danger around Fairhaven becomes more immediate.
