Joyce and Elizabeth visit Jill Usher in Manchester to investigate why Holly Lewis called Jill just before Holly died. To avoid alarming Jill, Joyce leads with an elaborate false story about an unclaimed estate belonging to Jill’s supposed great-great-uncle, a circus magician named Harry Ablett. Elizabeth lets Joyce continue because their real goal is to keep Jill talking and gather any link to Holly.

As Jill listens with her children around her, Elizabeth carefully asks about family history and whether Jill has any ties to southern England. Jill says she once worked in Brighton but is otherwise Manchester born and bred. That answer gives Elizabeth a possible connection to Holly, but Elizabeth still avoids mentioning Holly’s name because she does not yet know whether Jill was Holly’s friend or somehow involved in Holly’s death.

Joyce deepens the deception by producing fake photographs of the invented ancestor, and Jill accepts them warmly. Watching Jill’s reaction, Elizabeth starts to think Jill is probably not a criminal or a threat. Instead, Elizabeth suspects Jill and Holly were genuinely close, which makes Elizabeth reluctant but determined to break bad news in order to learn whether Holly would have contacted Jill for help.

Before Elizabeth can mention Holly, Jill’s husband Jamie arrives home. Jill explains that Joyce and Elizabeth are from an heir-hunting company, but Jamie immediately challenges them for identification. Elizabeth and Joyce withdraw rather than push harder in front of Jill, and Jamie escorts them out. Once in the hallway, Jamie warns them that if the visit is a scam they will regret it, and when Elizabeth asks what he does for a living, Jamie refuses to answer, ending the encounter with suspicion rather than a useful lead.
