Chapter 55
Overview
At Ibrahim's apartment, Joyce finds Kendrick and Tia drawn into discussion of bombs, the hidden Bitcoin fortune, and the locked safe connected to Holly Lewis's murder. The chapter's key shift comes when Elizabeth arrives and proves that Holly's last phone activity was not a real contact trail but a disguised record of her half of the code: 416617.
This discovery moves the investigation much closer to the money and suggests Holly successfully left a clue intended to survive her death. It also brings Tia and Kendrick into closer proximity with the main mystery, increasing the risk that desperation, greed, and the murder inquiry will collide.
Summary
Joyce visits Ibrahim because she is bored after breakfast and finds an unexpectedly busy scene at his apartment. Kendrick is there, freshly interested in bombs after Holly Lewis's death, and Tia is there as well, asking detailed questions about how bombs are made and, especially, how they are defused. Joyce quickly senses that Tia's presence is unusual and that Ibrahim is being deliberately vague about why he is helping her.
The conversation turns to the hidden fortune in the secure vault. Joyce explains that a large amount of money is locked away behind a code that no single living person fully knows: Holly knew half, and the other person with the remaining half has disappeared. Ibrahim adds that the money may be connected not only to theft but to identifying whoever killed Holly, which raises the stakes of solving the code before the murderer does.
Tia and Kendrick react with curiosity and excitement, trying to understand whether cracking the code would let someone steal the money. Ibrahim makes clear that the sum involved is far larger than the half-million from Tia's failed robbery, and his answer also suggests that he suspects greed could become a danger. The discussion shows how the Bitcoin mystery, Holly's death, and Tia and Kendrick's criminal troubles are beginning to overlap.
Elizabeth then arrives abruptly and announces that she has solved Holly's code. Ibrahim says he has a theory based on Holly's birth year and the prominence of the digits seven and six, but Elizabeth presents the fuller answer: Holly was not really calling Jill Usher or Jamie Usher, but using phone numbers to record the sequence 07941 and then 416617. Elizabeth concludes that Holly deliberately hid her half of the code inside the call record, and Ibrahim agrees that the pattern fits, giving the group a crucial breakthrough in the larger investigation.
