Chapter 47
Overview
After the attack on Jason’s house, Jason rushes Kendrick and Ron to Ibrahim’s flat for safety, showing that the threat has widened to endanger Kendrick directly. At the flat, the storyline threads converge as Ron and Jason discover that Connie and Tia are already hiding there, forcing a tense temporary alliance among people with old grudges.
The chapter matters less for new plot revelations than for what it shows: Kendrick’s protected childhood world has been broken by violence, and the adults’ separate crises are now colliding in one place. Even so, Kendrick’s quiet connection with Tia adds a small note of calm amid escalating danger.
Summary
Kendrick travels with Jason and his grandfather Ron to Ibrahim’s flat because he realizes that if gunmen found Jason’s house, Ron’s home may also be unsafe. As they hurry there, Kendrick notices that both adults are shaken in ways that frighten him. From Kendrick’s point of view, recent events have destroyed the sense that danger was kept on the other side of a wall; now the fear has entered his own life.
While they approach the building, Kendrick remembers the shooting at Jason’s house, where a man posing as a delivery driver kept firing as Jason carried Kendrick through the garden, over a fence and into the woods. At Ibrahim’s door, Kendrick asks whether they will all be able to stay, showing his immediate concern about being separated again. He feels safer once inside, but worries about what will happen if Jason and Ron leave.
Ibrahim warns Ron that he already has guests. In the sitting room, Kendrick meets Connie and Tia, and the atmosphere is tense because Ron helped send Connie to prison and Connie once threatened to kill him. Kendrick bluntly questions Connie about that history, and Connie admits he is right to criticize her. Ron learns that Tia is staying there too, and the adults begin guarded conversation while Ibrahim tries to calm the room with drinks.
Ron sends Kendrick into the kitchen with Tia so the adults can talk privately. Away from the conflict, Kendrick and Tia share Sprite and discover they both like Friends. Their brief, gentle exchange contrasts with the fear and hostility in the other room, giving Kendrick a small moment of comfort as the chapter ends.
