Joanna mentions Joyce’s call about the bomb found under Nick’s car, and Paul tries to reassure her that Nick will probably get in touch. Their conversation turns to Nick and Holly’s business, The Compound, which Paul describes as underground cold storage for secrets, and Joanna also lightly probes Paul about Holly.

Paul’s phone then buzzes with a message apparently from Nick saying that Nick is safe, must lie low, and cannot explain yet. Joanna is immediately relieved and urges Paul to reply and offer help. As more messages arrive, Joanna prepares to tell Elizabeth, but Paul notices something odd: Nick addresses him as “Paul,” even though Nick has always called him “Paolo.”

Because that detail feels wrong, Joanna suggests testing the sender with a question only the real Nick would answer. Paul asks about Nick’s first car, but the sender avoids answering and instead acts offended, insisting Paul should simply trust him and tell everyone Nick is alive. The evasive replies convince both Joanna and Paul that the messages are fake, because the real Nick would have answered easily.

They conclude that someone else has Nick’s phone and may also have Nick himself. Joanna tries to call Elizabeth and then her mother, but gets no answer. Paul screenshots the messages and initially says he will send them to the police, but Joanna argues that showing them to Elizabeth will be faster and more useful, sharpening the sense that Nick is still in serious danger.
