Joanna and Paul are at Paul’s old flat with an estate agent, preparing to sell it. Joanna reflects that she wanted to rent it out for the income, but Paul refused because he does not believe in becoming a landlord, so they chose to sell instead.

As the estate agent continues the viewing, Joanna hears Paul’s landline ringing and uses the call as an excuse to step away. The caller, Jeremy Jenkins, is a solicitor looking for Paul. Jeremy explains that he is holding a package for Nicholas Silver to be opened if Holly Lewis dies, and Holly’s death has now apparently occurred.

Joanna tells Jeremy that Holly and Nick were friends of Paul’s and asks how Jeremy obtained this number. Jeremy says Holly’s number was to be called if Nick died, Nick’s number was to be called if Holly died, and Paul’s number was to be used only if both Holly and Nick were unavailable. That arrangement immediately makes Paul’s connection to both dead-or-missing figures seem more significant.

Joanna then asks what would happen if Nick were also dead. Jeremy replies that, in that case, both envelopes would become Paul Brett’s property. The call ends with Joanna stunned, because she has just learned that Paul was the fallback recipient in Holly and Nick’s secret plan and could inherit whatever they left behind if both of them are gone.
