Chapter 26
Overview
At Jasper’s house, Elizabeth and Joyce get a major break when Jasper recovers Holly Lewis’s last attempted call from her damaged SIM card and Elizabeth learns the number belongs to Jill Usher. The discovery gives the investigation a fresh, concrete lead connected to Holly’s death.
At the same time, the chapter shifts briefly from espionage to care as Joyce recognizes Jasper’s isolation and insists on helping him reclaim his home from the relics of other people’s expectations. That small intervention matters because it shows Joyce valuing human need alongside the case.
Summary
Joyce and Elizabeth return to Jasper’s house in Purley so Jasper can examine the charred SIM card taken from Holly Lewis’s phone. While Jasper uses one of his specialist phones to recover what he can, Joyce notices small domestic details around the house and continues to think about Jasper’s loneliness.
Jasper finds the most important piece of information quickly. Holly Lewis made a final outgoing call at 9:44 p.m., about a minute before she died in the car explosion. The call did not connect, but the attempt matters because it shows Holly was urgently trying to reach someone immediately before the bomb went off.
Elizabeth reacts at once and phones her old contact Clive Baxter, pressing him to identify the number despite his reluctance to work on a Saturday. Because Elizabeth insists and reminds Clive of an old debt, Clive checks the number immediately. He reports back that the number belongs to Jill Usher, giving Elizabeth a new lead in the investigation into Holly’s death and the missing Bitcoin fortune.
While Elizabeth focuses on the case, Joyce turns her attention to Jasper himself. Looking at the many porcelain cats in his dining room, Joyce gently asks who among the gift-givers is still alive and realizes almost nobody is. She suggests packing the cats away so Jasper can reclaim the room, add bookshelves, and begin inviting people over.
Joyce then notices in Jasper’s kitchen that he has bought second-hand mugs and set out tea bags in anticipation of their visit, which moves her deeply. Even though Elizabeth wants to leave immediately with the new information, Joyce insists that helping Jasper clear the room is also important. Jasper eagerly agrees to make tea, and Joyce begins packing the first porcelain cat, turning the investigation visit into a small act of friendship and renewal.
